On Directional Signs Written in Haiku

Did you know New York City's Department of Transportation now posts traffic warning signs written in haiku?

You remember haiku, the good 'ol 5-7-5, Japanese poetic form taught to you eons ago.

For real. Check it out.

NYC Traffic Haiku

Yes, real signs on the real streets of New York.

I'm not sure about you, but I have trouble obeying signs, even cute signs written in haiku. Often, I think I know best.

Today, I drove through the same construction zone that caused me to birth my baby on the side of the road. Men held signs "SLOW" and "STOP", but they should have said, "Ignore me because you are going to do your own thing anyway."

And I did (Don't think less of me. It was a really long wait).

"How often as a people do we make eye contact with God as He is waving us down the narrow path, and we just decide to gun our motor and go down the wide path instead."
—Quoted from here

Sure, there are occasions when I listen to whispers, but most of the time I gun it, especially if I don't like the way God is waving me.

Question for you: What decision have you made recently? Walk me through the process in which you discovered the answer. Friends? Prayer? Dreams? Signs written in haiku?

I haven't made a huge decision lately, but when I do have one to make I just pray for God's desire and not my own. I am always amazed at how He answers. I will hear a sermon, read a scripture, talk with a friend over exactly what I asked the Lord's help with. His presence excites me every time.

Cooking Up Faith,

All good examples. I especially love it when friends speak to me about something, and it applies directly to what I'm going through.

Thanks for reading.

Biggest one? Adopting a third child and from Haiti. Signs? All over. News reports, friends, Scripture galore!, "gut" feelings that are like whispers from the Holy Spirit, money that was sitting in the savings account for a "rainy day" and a husband that turned to me and said: "I knew all along that was adoption money, didn't you?" I did not, blind, dense me.
Need to go on? :)

I'm still trying to process signs in haiku and I had my baby on the side of the road... But on the topic at hand I would have to say my shower. Strange I know but I've had more light bulb moments, God revelations, and amazing prayer times in my shower than almost anywhere else. My husband will even tell me "I think you need to go take a shower" when he wants me to give him advice on something! I think it's because God has my undivided attention then in a way he doesn't anywhere else!

Ha! That's some inventive new signage!
I especially like your suggestion about the 'ignore me' sign ;)

Haven't made a big decision lately, but one that comes to mind is when we took the job in Neillsville. I remember fighting God internally throughout that process. It was painful. Looking back tho, when I finally gave in to His way (surrendered), peace came. It was like peace washed all over me. And if i think about it, peace is never present when we are "gunning it" and going our own way, but peace is always there when we follow His directions. Even when its hard and you have to leave your favorite friends of all time. Great post.

Okay, signs in haiku seems a little freaky to me. Heh.
No big decisions lately but I usually try to go by how peaceful I feel about it.
Thanks for popping by my blog. :-)

the signs are amazing to the artist in me. but frightening to the flustered driver in me.

you are my hero, precious one.

OK, you had me at "birth my baby on the side of the road"... my goodness girl! And you are in good company with the whole gunning it thing... I tend to get ahead of myself too, always trying to speed forward- often reading into any and every little thing to be the confirmation I'm craving to receive.

Wow, that's crazy. Did you really birth your baby on the side of the road?

I haven't made any major decision lately, but I'm praying about direction in my writing, and a sign in haiku would really help me out right now;)

p.s. oh, you can get the jesse tree devotional from Ann Voskamp's blog:)

i make decisions
without asking God for help
which leads to fix this!

Hey girl! How are you? Can I just say I've gunned it one too many times and have the dents to prove it. Why can't I just wait on God? It always turns out better in the end.

We need some signs like this in NC! Is it terrible when it comes to God, signs don't seem big enough ... I need blimps with Christmas lights attached .. and my name on it. I want the easy to read stuff instead of finding Him in the quiet and still.

Amanda D,
Yes, huge blimps with flashing lights. The only problem? I would still doubt!

All of the above...except maybe the signs in haiku.
